Through a combination of engaging lectures, interactive workshops, networking, guidance by thematic experts and practical exercises.

On day 4 of the ‘Young Women Leaders in Public Policy Fellowship’ program, Dr. Simi Mehta, CEO and Editorial Director, IMPRI, shared her insights on the steps to be undertaken while writing research articles in relation to social sciences.

Steps Followed in Writing a Research Article

Dr. Mehta emphasized in her session on the methods and exercises to be adopted for selecting the topic for a research article as the first step. The topic according to Dr. Mehta should be a combination of area of interest as well as lie in the area of expertise of the researcher. Following the selection of the topic, the researcher needs to write an abstract which would include a problem statement and the major research question that the article aims to answer.

Dr. Mehta also mentioned a brief literature review needs to be attached to the abstract to identify the gaps in the existing literature. The gaps in the literature, as Dr. Mehta explained would form the basis of the research question and hypothesis.

After the finalization of the research questions and hypotheses, a comprehensive, thorough and meticulous literature review is needed to consolidate the question. Dr. Mehta reiterated that a critical study of the existing literature is required in order to contextualize the study. While presenting the literature review in the article, Dr. Mehta delineated the thematic arrangement of the arguments under various sub-headings. The literature review should consist of appropriate citations as specified by Dr. Mehta in the session.

Post literature review, Dr. Mehta introduced to the session the components of the research design. As an esteemed expert in the field, Dr. Mehta elucidated the contents of research design, such as the methodology of the study, sampling techniques and data collection.

Writing manuscript-

Dr. Mehta, taking the session forward, explained the skeleton of the research article that needs to be followed. The article should begin with a title page followed by a table of contents, a list of abbreviations and an executive summary of the research article. Dr. Mehta in her session explained in length and breadth each of the components. Subsequent to the executive summary, a concise introduction explaining the objective of the article should be added. A literature review would follow the introduction. After the literature
review, Dr. Mehta explained how the research design will be incorporated into the article aligning with the project.

The findings of the research, as outlined by Dr. Mehta should be added under results. Dr. Mehta delineated various ways in which data and the patterns and trends within them can be presented in the article. Following the results, the research article should also address the limitations of the research.

The concluding part of the research article should summarize the key findings and restate the research objective. Dr. Mehta specified the referencing style in the article should be in accordance with the requirements and guidelines of the respective journal. Appendix can be included in an article comprising any additional information like photographs, interview transcripts, etc.

Editing and revising the draft manuscript is crucial in writing any research article. Dr. Mehta emphasized that it is important to get the manuscript reviewed by colleagues, mentors and supervisors to rectify the possible errors. Dr. Mehta further acquainted the session with the procedure followed by journals before ultimately publishing the research article.

Concluding the session, Dr Mehta shared some additional advice on writing a research article- adhering to ethical guidelines, using relevant visuals and ensuring the research article is properly cited.
