IMPRI Centre for Human Dignity and Development, IMPRI Impact and Policy Research Institute, New Delhi, conducted Law and Public Policy Youth Fellowship – Cohort 2.0 Winter’23 on the theme: Promoting Human Rights and Ending Gender-Based ViolenceThe session was held on the Occasion of Human Rights Day. On Day 2 of the course, our third speaker Professor Ceena Paul, Professor, Department of Economics, M.D. Shah College for Women, Mumbai, covered an intellectually invigorating experience, immersing participants in a comprehensive exploration of the art and science of crafting a research article.

With her seasoned expertise, adeptly steered the cohort through a systematic roadmap that delineated the critical steps involved in this scholarly endeavor. The initial focus on discerning the nuances of the assignment’s requirements set the tone for a disciplined and targeted approach. This foundational understanding ensured that participants were well-versed in tailoring their work to meet academic expectations.

Steps in Research Article

The subsequent phase delved into the pivotal task of selecting a research topic, underscoring the significance of choosing a subject that was not only relevant but also aligned with the participants’ interests and the broader academic discourse. Professor Ceena Paul then led an insightful discussion on the importance of preliminary literature research, guiding participants to navigate the wealth of academic, media, and public perspectives. This critical step provided a nuanced understanding of the existing landscape, informing the subsequent stages of the research process.

A key highlight was the fourth step, where participants were challenged to articulate a research question that was not only original but also addressed gaps in the literature with precision. The cultivation of such a question, Professor Ceena Paul emphasized, is fundamental to contributing meaningfully to the scientific community. The ensuing step required participants to meticulously gather supporting arguments, reinforcing the thesis with a robust foundation. The importance of maintaining a detailed bibliography was underscored, ensuring transparency and academic rigor.

The session seamlessly transitioned to an in-depth discussion of the four essential components of a research paper: introduction, method, results and discussion, and conclusion. Professor Ceena Paul’s guidance provided participants with a structured template to organize their thoughts cohesively and present their research with clarity.

The latter part of the session encapsulated the indispensable elements of the writing process, including citing sources, thorough document revision, source refinement, and rigorous checks for grammar and formatting. The holistic approach concluded with an emphasis on tailoring the research paper for its intended audience, ensuring that the scholarly work resonates with and serves the needs of its readership.

In session transcended the confines of conventional academic discourse, delving into the historical foundations of human rights and the intricate legal frameworks safeguarding them. The participants not only gained a profound understanding of the legal provisions addressing gender-based violence in India but also seamlessly integrated this knowledge with the practical skills required for meticulous research paper composition.

The synthesis of theoretical understanding with practical application not only equipped participants with the tools to navigate the complex landscape of academic writing but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the interconnected realms of law, policy, and human rights within the Indian context. As the participants internalized these multifaceted dimensions, the session culminated in an empowered cohort ready to contribute meaningfully to the intersection of law and public policy.

In conclusion, Day 2 of the Law and Public Policy Youth Fellowship Program was useful in educating the participants in the history of human rights, the laws and legal frameworks that safeguard our human rights and the different legal provisions available for redressal of gender-based violence in India. The participants were also able to use this knowledge and gain insights into writing a research paper in a systematic and scientific way.
